GST Online Payment - How to Pay GST Online
As per the GST laws, every taxpayer has to register themselves under GST once they lie in GST criteria. According to the 32nd GST council meeting, the major decisions were taken about Goods and Services Tax. GST registration and GST return filing have become entirely an Online procedure, were the taxpayer don’t have to visit any offices for completing the payment or filing procedure.
In the year 2017 -18, the number of GST registration was above 1.03 crores and later in the year 2018 - 19 it kept on increasing. There are many such taxpayers who are not yet aware of the Online payment process of GST. So here in this article let us understand, how to pay GST Online.
GST Payment Rules
Let us first understand, what are the basic GST payment rules.
You should be aware of the payment system if you want to avoid GST penalties.
The GST payment or monthly GST payment is valid only when the due taxes are cleared for the past months.
Eg - The taxpayer can make the payment for the month of January when he has cleared the payment for the month of December.
In case the GST payment amount is due, then the interest will be applied from the due date.
How to Pay GST Online
So let us understand the procedure of GST payment Online.
Step 1: Login to GST Portal
Visit Online GST portal.
Enter your Username and Password.
Enter valid CAPTCHA and click on Login.
Step 2: Create Challan
Once you successfully Login, select the “Services” section.
In Services -> Payment
Payment -> Create Challan
Step 3: Input your GSTIN
To create challan you have to provide the following mentioned details.
Enter the amount and select the payment mode (NEFT/RTGS, Online payment, Over the counter - there is a limit of Rs. 10,000 for per challan)
Once you provide the details, click on Generate Challan.
Step 4: Make Online Payment (Net banking/NEFT-RTGS)
Once you click on “Generate Challan” a summary page will appear. To make the payment you have to follow the steps given below:
Select the “Mode of Payment”
You can select any of the options such as NEFT/RTGS, Online payment, Over the counter.
Once you make your choice, click on “Make Payment”
Step 5: Offline payment
You can also make Offline payment, by following the steps mentioned below
Take a printout of the challan and directly pay in the bank.
Once the payment is done you will receive the Challan with details of the paid tax.
At the end the Tax paid challan with Challan Identification Number (CIN) will be credited to your account.
GST payment challan
GST payment challan should be made on GST portal first, it is a key document utilized for GST Online payment. Following mentioned are the things contained in the GST payment challan.
CPIN (Common Portal Identification Number)
CPIN is a 14 digit unique number to identify challan. It is issued before generating GST payment challan.
Challan generation date
Here the date when the Challan is generated will be mentioned. The validity will start from this date itself.
Challan Expiry date
The Challan is expired after 15 days of generation of Challan.
Mode of Payment
While making the payment which mode you have chosen is shown in this section.
Taxpayer details
The details such as Name, Address, GSTIN (Goods and Services Identification Number), the E-mail address of the taxpayer, Contact details).
How to Track GST Payment Status
The process to track the GST payment status is very easy, Following mentioned are the steps to be followed while tracking GST payment status.
Visit GST Portal Online
Click on Services -> Payment -> Track Payment Status
Enter GSTIN/Other Id & Enter CPIN
Click on “Track Status”.
How to check GST Payment History

Visit Services -> Payment -> Challan history
