What is FSSAI?

FSSAI - Food Safety and Standard Authority of India is an autonomous body that is established under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Government of India. FSSAI License is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation.

FSSAI License or FSSAI Registration in India is mandatory for starting a food or related business. The FSSAI License is issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority Act,2006. The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India and the State Food Authorities are jointly responsible for implementing the FSAI rules. The FSSAI is responsible for registering and licensing the Food business operators and also lays the rules and regulation for running any food or related business in India

The FSSAI acts to secure the law for food and relevant business by establishing standards for food to control the manufacturing of food.

Types of FoSCoS FSSAI License

FSSAI registration is segregated in three different types such as Basic registration, State registration and Central registration.

1) Basic FoSCoS FSSAI License

Annual turnover below 12 lakhs

2) State FoSCoS FSSAI License

Annual turnover above 12 lakhs and below 20 crores

3) Central FoSCoS FSSAI License

Eligibility for applying for an FoSCoS FSSAI Basic Registration:

Food capacity (Milk & milk products, meat & meat products are not allowed) Less than 100 kg/ltr per day
Milk 500 litres per day
Milk solids 2.5 Metric Ton (MT) per annum
Vegetable oil or the process Turnover of up to 100 kg or ltr per day.
Meat processing production More than 100 kgs per day or 30 MT per day.
Slaughtering capacity Less than 2 large animals or 10 small animals or 50 poultry birds per day
Food units other than the above mentioned 100 ltr/Kg per day
Cold storage Turnover of up to Rs.12 lakhs per annum
Wholesalers The yearly turnover of up to Rs.12 lakhs
Retailers The yearly turnover of up to Rs.12 lakhs
Distributors The yearly turnover of up to Rs.12 lakhs
Suppliers The yearly turnover of up to Rs.12 lakhs
Dhaba owners Rs.12 lakhs turnover per annum
Clubs/Canteen Rs.12 lakhs turnover per annum
Hotels/Restaurant Rs.12 lakhs turnover per annum
Transporters Rs.12 lakhs turnover per annum

Documents Required for FoSCoS FSSAI Basic Registration

Following are the documents required for FoSCoS FSSAI Basic Registration.

  • Photo identity of the Food Business Operator
  • Document for Identity Proof like Ration Card, Voter ID Card, PAN Card, Driving License, Passport, Aadhaar Card, Senior Citizen Card, Department Issued ID

  • Form – B (completed and signed)
  • Partnership Deed / Certificate of Incorporation / Articles of Association / Memorandum of Association
  • Proof of premises like rental agreement, etc.

Validity and the Renewal of State FSSAI License

The State FSSAI license comes with a flexible validity duration ranging from 1-5 years. The cost of the license would increase in accordance with the validity period. As far as the renewal is concerned, the central FSSAI license should be renewed before the 30 days of the expiration date, or else the penalties would be levied. The process of renewal for a food license is as simple as applying for the new license.
